Super Saiyan is an important element in the Dragon Ball franchise that provides quite a lot of changes in the story. After first appearing in Goku's fight against Frieza in the Dragon Ball Z series, and surprising fans, Super Saiyan has now become a "mandatory" transformation that appears in every Dragon Ball story. In fact, Akira Toriyama created various variations of the series.
However, when Buu is introduced into the story, Akira Toriyama then explores other sources of power, including the transformation commonly called "Mystic". Although basically Mystic is not a transformation like Super Saiyan, Mystic still provides a very powerful additional power to its users. To date, Gohan is the only main character and Saiyan to ever get one. Then, which is stronger between Super Saiyan and Mystic?

Mystic: No Need for Super Saiyan
Viewed from various sides, indeed the power of Mystic is an "alternative" to replace the Super Saiyan transformation ability. Since Old Kai gives Gohan strength and also increases it, turning into Super Saiyan will certainly not give Gohan any additional power at all. Even if it could, maybe just a little, considering how turning into a Super Saiyan takes a lot of energy. After all, Chi-Chi isn't really that happy if her Saiyan family turns into a Super Saiyan.
Super Saiyan: Has Various Forms
Although Mystic can provide a tremendous power increase, it cannot give the user the ability to further increase the user's power to the next stage. On the other hand, as we know, Super Saiyan has many versions and the "higher" level of a Super Saiyan, the more powerful it is.
This can also be a strategy in dealing with enemies. To face an ordinary opponent. Super Saiyan 1 might work. If then there is a stronger enemy, then the user can increase his Super Saiyan level, and so on. Mystic certainly doesn't have this kind of ability, because basically Mystic only has one level of power.
Mystic: Increases Strength Many Times
Indeed, the Super Saiyan form gives the user a power boost, and none of Gohan's Super Saiyans 1 and 2 are capable of dealing with Majin Buu's "innocent" form. It was only when Gohan accessed the Mystic ability that he was able to match even exceed the Buu form. In fact, based on what was shown, Mystic was much stronger than the first level Super Buu, which was much stronger than Innocent Buu.
Another proof is that Mystic is able to protect Gohan from Super Buu's attacks, compared to Super Saiyan Gotenks. However, there should be an important note to remember, that this increase in power depends on who and how strong the user is. To Gohan, who was half Earth human and half Saiyan, the improvement was obvious. However, this ability might not be felt if there were krillins or someone who didn't have great strength.

Super Saiyan: Has the “God” Form
When used on the right figure with powerful abilities, Mystic's multiple times power is capable of overpowering the first three Super Saiyan forms. But, as mentioned above, that Super Saiyan has several stages or levels which Mystic does not have. And Super Saiyan God form, is the highest level where his ability is able to defeat Mystic.
A clear example is that even though Gohan is a strong fighter with Mystic in him, but it will never be enough to match the strength of Beerus. It is different with the Super Saiyan God form which is able to match / balance Beerus' strength, and force him to fight seriously. Mystic is later shown to be able to match Goku's Super Saiyan Blue form, but there doesn't seem to be any improvement over Gohan's basic form.
Mystic: Always Ready to Use
Even though Super Saiyan God is the highest stage, in essence, Super Saiyan abilities are no different from Super Saiyan abilities in general. One big downside to this is that Super Saiyan doesn't last long. If then a Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan God takes too many attacks in combat or the user loses a lot of energy, they will return to their basic form.
For Mystic, this ability recognized no such thing. Those with the Mystic ability will always have an increase in strength, there is no time limit or other limitation. Even if the user loses a lot of power or energy, it doesn't make the Mystic user return to the main form. Mystic, one might say, “works” as the user's basic form.
Super Saiyan: Doesn't Need the Help of Others
In order to access the abilities and powers of the Super Saiyan God form, Saiyans must either train with someone who can or can teach them or, just like Mystic, they must take part in a certain ritual with others. However, in the initial three Super Saiyan forms, those who want to have this power only need to do fairly strenuous training or harness the anger within themselves.
Super Saiyan is the ultimate transformation for Goku, who did choose to increase his abilities and power the old fashioned way. However, Goku also actually acted "cheating" when Old Kai gave him an offer to awaken Goku's power before the Tournament of Power began. Maybe, because of the situation that forced Goku, he finally accepted Old Kai's offer and broke the "battle".

Mystic: No Need to Use Anger
Gohan still needs to rely on his anger when he tries to access Mystic's power for the first time, because before Gohan got Mystic, he was originally trying to access Super Saiyan's power. However, in the future, when Gohan needed Mystic's power, he no longer needed to rely on his emotions or anger.
Since being able to access Mystic's power is by moving as if to access Super Saiyan, Goten and Trunks, who can become Super Saiyans without relying on their anger, can also theoretically access Mystic's abilities without the need to use emotions. However, of course they still had to meet with Old Kai and perform a very long ritual.
Super Saiyan: Not Easy to Lose
Mystic is indeed more efficient than Super Saiyan, but there is one drawback faced by mystic users: if we don't use it, we will lose its power. In the Resurrection 'F' story, Gohan, who stopped training regularly, no longer has the ability or access to Mystic. Gohan was only able to use this ability again after he did intensive training with Piccolo.
Uniquely, this does not apply to Gohan's Super Saiyan form. Even after seven years of not training, Gohan was still able to access Super Saiyan 1 and 2 powers. Gohan also had no problems accessing his first Super Saiyan tier when fighting against Frieza's troops.
Mystic: No Wasting Energy
Accessing Super Saiyan form requires more energy than Mystic. In other words, Super Saiyan is a way to "drain" Ki from the user. Examples are Super Saiyan Blue, which is able to absorb energy faster than Super Saiyan God, and Super Saiyan 3 is one of the Super Saiyan forms that Goku has a hard time defending because he has too much Ki to expend.
Mystic doesn't have this problem. Mystic doesn't need to expend as much energy as Super Saiyan 3 or Super Saiyan Blue and even Mystic users don't need to do certain exercises, just to enable them to control or minimize their energy expenditure.

Super Saiyan: Can Be Combined With Great Ape Form (In GT Story)
Even though it's not a canon story, Dragon Ball GT gives something different to the Super Saiyan form which is actually an advantage for this transformation. A Saiyan can access new Super Saiyan transformations once they become Super Saiyan in the Great Ape form, which is later in the series referred to as Super Saiyan 4.
Saiyans who use the Mystic transformation still have the opportunity to access Super Saiyan 4 abilities, as Mystic does not place a limit on the user not being able to perform Super Saiyan transformations. However, it is difficult to say if Super Saiyan 4 can provide additional power, because Mystic itself has managed to bring out all the potential of its users.
