3 possible outcomes of Shanks confrontation with Kaido

Ahead of the Battle of Marineford in One Piece, Kaido is actually reportedly moving after Whitebeard. But Shanks intercepted him.

What happened next has not been revealed in the One Piece manga. What is clear, Shanks then made it to Marineford unharmed and Kaido didn't go after Whitebeard.

What happens when Shanks confronts Kaido? Here are three possibilities!

1. No fight, Shanks managed to get Kaido back with words

Shanks and Kaido's confrontation ended without this battle being possible.

Because when Shanks' ship reached Marineford, Shanks and his crew looked fine. Even the ship is fine.

So it feels like there is no fight between them.

Then how did Shanks make Kaido back off with just words?

It could be that Shanks made a certain deal with Kaido. Although until chapter 1018, there is no sign of Shanks and Kaido making any agreement.

Another possibility is that Kaido hesitates to fight Shanks first before he continues to face Whitebeard.

Shanks is a figure that Kaido respects. He includes the silhouettes Kaido envisioned in chapter 1001, alongside Xebec, Roger, Oden, and Whitebeard; four legendary figures.

It is possible that Kaido will realize that if he dares to fight Shanks, he will be seriously injured. So if he succeeds in chasing Whitebeard too he will end up being ridiculous. Either by Whitebeard or by the later Marines.

Why doesn't Kaido want to die? Wouldn't it be epic if he died from being injured by Shanks and then finished off by Whitebeard or the Marines?

If we look at Kaido and Yamato's dialogue in Onigashima, there is something special about Wano. It could be that even though Kaido wants to die, he wants to find the specialties of Wano first. Because of that he didn't take action that would surely kill him like throwing himself into the sea.

So when Shanks appears blocking his path, Kaido will probably find fighting against Shanks too much of a hassle.

It could also be that Shanks just offered Kaido a beer, and that was enough to make Kaido stop.

2. A fight ensues, but Shanks' group manages to hold off Kaido until Kaido retreats

It's also possible that Kaido's act of trying to chase Whitebeard was impulsive, and Shanks managed to hold it in long enough for Kaido to notice it.

I actually suspect that Kaido didn't even bring his fleet with him when he tried to chase Whitebeard. He could have turned into a dragon and then walked on his own, driven by the impulsive emotions of drunkenness.

If Kaido didn't bring his fleet, Shanks' elite crew seemed to be able to push Kaido easily. Especially when the fight takes place over the sea.

That situation would be like Kaido had to face Kozuki Oden without the help of his troops. He can be ganged up by Oden and the samurai Kozuki.

If Kaido really wanted to attack Whitebeard because he was drunk, Shanks might hold him long enough for Kaido to think more clearly and realize that it was unwise to risk his life to chase Whitebeard instead.

3. Shanks managed to beat Kaido, and that defeat was one of Kaido's seven defeats?

Come to think of it, Kaido's count of losing seven times was only conveyed after the time skip.

It would be interesting if Kaido really wanted to go after Whitebeard, but Shanks' group then defeated him.

Then Kaido's seventh defeat just happened in the hands of Shanks ahead of Marineford.

Shanks also became one of the figures that Kaido imagined because he had indeed defeated Kaido.

Come to think of it, it's hard to imagine the moment Shanks met Kaido other than in the confrontation before Marineford anyway.

Remember, Kaido is usually in Wano. Therefore Whitebeard could not help Wano carelessly, because if he came to Wano there would be a big war.

Meanwhile, there was no sign of Shanks ever having been to Wano. So if Shanks and Kaido fight, the duel doesn't happen in Wano.

How did Shanks beat Kaido? Well, Shanks' Haoshoku Haki is far superior to Zoro and Luffy, that's without a doubt. So every Shanks attack will be very dangerous for Kaido.

Besides that I really suspect, as I raised in point number two, Kaido is acting impulsively and moving on his own. It could be that his men have to chase Kaido while Kaido becomes a dragon and steps in the air towards Marineford.

If Shanks' group had to fight Kaido's group, there would definitely be a big war and Shanks would be held back longer or suffer more damage.

But it's easier to beat Kaido if Kaido really comes alone.

Kaido still has a reputation for being impossible to beat one on one. Shanks could have won, but he was still helped by his elite crew.

Especially if the fight does take place over the sea. Shanks could have won once Kaido got in. However, the power of Uo Uo no Mi makes Kaido unable to die just because he drowns, as happened to Jack who is a Fishman but eats a Devil Fruit.

It was only after Kaido fell that Shanks left for Marineford.

Why is Kaido still alive? It could be because before Shanks gave the closing blow, Kaido had already retreated. Or first helped by his men who came to follow.

Or there are certain situations where it's too much trouble for Shanks to finish Kaido, so they decide to just leave Kaido alone.
